Description:
Taps and dies are used to engrave a spiral pattern into a wood or metal surface, making it suitable for application of a screw, bolt, or nut (taps inscribe the inner diameter of a surface, dies the outer diameter). This is an improvement on the use of nails or rivets because a screw/bolt/nut can be replaced and/or removed and reused. Taps will also inscribe "rifling" (the spiral pattern again) into the barrel of a firearm, giving projectiles fired from it a spin that increases range and accuracy. Manufacture of taps and dies requires metal-hardening techniques beyond the reach of today's technology, making surviving sets more valuable. The full set includes dies (the round ones) and taps (the oblong ones that look like drill bits) in a variety of sizes, plus handles to provide leverage while using them, all in a sturdy plastic case.
